Volvo Ireland Recalls XC60, XC90, V60, XC40 and C40 Over Braking Function Fault

Volvo Car Ireland Limited has announced a voluntary recall of several Volvo models in Ireland due to a braking functionality fault. The recall affects 473 vehicles in the Republic of Ireland, spanning models XC60, XC90, V60, XC40 and C40, produced between 2019 and 2025.

Affected Vehicles

The recall applies to 473 Volvo vehicles manufactured during the following periods:

  • Volvo XC60: 24 July 2019 – 25 June 2025
  • Volvo XC90: 24 July 2019 – 11 June 2025

  • Volvo XC40: 27 October 2020 – 11 June 2025
  • Volvo C40: 20 October 2021 – 11 June 2025

Details of the Fault

The safety defect involves a potential loss of braking functionality under certain conditions:

  • When coasting downhill with ‘B’ mode selected (plug-in hybrid models)
  • When using One Pedal Drive mode (pure electric models)

In these situations, braking capability may be temporarily disabled, which significantly increases the risk of a collision.

Risks

The key risks associated with this fault include:

  • Temporary loss of braking power, especially on inclines
  • Increased likelihood of rear-end or downhill collisions
  • Higher risk to both occupants and other road users

What Owners Should Do

Volvo Ireland will contact affected owners directly with instructions for arranging an inspection and software update at authorised dealerships. Repairs will be carried out free of charge.

Owners of affected Volvo vehicles should:
