Volvo Car Ireland Limited has announced a voluntary recall of several plug-in hybrid models due to a potential defect in the high-voltage battery. The issue affects 199 vehicles in the Republic of Ireland, including V90, XC60, XC90, S90, V60 and S60 models, manufactured between 2019 and 2021.
Affected Vehicles
The recall covers 199 Volvo vehicles manufactured within the following periods:
- Volvo S60: 25 February 2019 – 30 November 2021
- Volvo XC60: 25 September 2019 – 29 November 2021
- Volvo XC90: 29 April 2019 – 29 November 2021
- Volvo V60: 15 May 2019 – 01 December 2021
- Volvo S90: 26 July 2019 – 24 May 2021
- Volvo V90: 09 June 2019 – 29 November 2021
Details of the Fault
The issue arises from a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery. Under certain conditions:
- Battery cells may overheat when the vehicle is fully charged
- This can increase the likelihood of a thermal event
- In the worst-case scenario, a battery fire may occur while the car is parked with a full charge
Importantly, there is no fire risk while driving the vehicle.
The corrective action includes:
- Inspection of the battery modules
- Replacement if necessary
- Installation of new software to continuously monitor battery performance
Risks
The primary risk is a fire developing while the vehicle is parked with a fully charged high-voltage battery. While the vehicle is in motion, the risk does not apply.
