Gowan Distributors Limited, the official Citroën distributor in Ireland, has announced a voluntary recall of certain Citroën Berlingo, C4 III, C4X, Spacetourer, and Jumpy models. The recall affects 165 vehicles in Ireland and relates to a software fault in the high-voltage battery monitoring system that could cause the engine to cut out unexpectedly while driving.
Affected Vehicles
The recall covers 165 vehicles in the Republic of Ireland manufactured within the following timeframes:
- Citroën Spacetourer / Jumpy 4: 14 December 2022 – 02 March 2023
- Citroën C4X: 18 August 2022 – 02 March 2023
- Citroën C4 III: 03 May 2022 – 15 March 2023
- Citroën Berlingo: 06 May 2022 – 03 April 2023
Details of the Fault
The issue stems from the battery monitoring system software in certain Citroën electric vehicles. The software, designed to act as a safety device by monitoring voltage and temperature levels, may contain errors:
- Erroneous cell voltage readings
- Incorrect module temperature signals sent to the monitoring system
- Failure of the software to resolve the detected error
As a result, the vehicle may fail to engage “Ready” mode after starting, and in severe cases, the car could lose acceleration power or the engine could cut out while driving.
Risks
If the fault occurs while driving, there is a risk of sudden engine cut-out or loss of power, which could increase the likelihood of an accident. While no incidents have been reported in Ireland to date, Citroën has initiated the recall as a preventive safety measure.
What Owners Should Do
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted directly by Citroën Ireland with instructions on arranging a free software update at their nearest Citroën dealership.
