Gowan Distributors Limited, the official Citroën distributor in Ireland, has issued a voluntary recall of several models due to a fault in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) software. The recall affects 260 vehicles in the Republic of Ireland, including Citroën C3 Aircross, C4, Celysée and C4X models. The issue may cause vehicles to fail to meet emissions regulations.
Affected Vehicles
The recall covers 260 vehicles in Ireland manufactured during the following periods:
- Citroën C3 Aircross: 18 May 2022 – 17 October 2023
- Citroën Celysée: 01 April 2022 – 31 August 2023
- Citroën C4: 20 July 2022 – 09 October 2023
- Citroën C4X: 05 July 2022 – 04 October 2023
Details of the Fault
The recall stems from ECU software that does not comply with Citroën’s technical specifications. The fault may cause:
- An incorrect threshold for detecting under-consumption of urea (AdBlue)
- Reduced performance of OBD (on-board diagnostics) in monitoring NOx emissions
This means that affected vehicles may fail to comply with emissions regulations, even if no immediate safety risk is present.
Risks
While this issue does not pose a direct driving safety risk, it can lead to:
- Failure to meet emissions standards, which may affect regulatory compliance
- Environmental impact due to higher-than-expected NOx emissions
What Owners Should Do
Citroën Ireland will contact owners of affected vehicles directly to arrange a free ECU software update at authorised dealerships.
Owners are advised to:
- Wait for official notification from Citroën Ireland, or
- Contact their local Citroën dealer to check if their vehicle is affected
