Kia Ireland Recalls Kia Soul Vehicles Over Fire Risk From ABS/ESC System

Kia Ireland has issued a voluntary recall for certain Kia Soul vehicles due to a fire risk linked to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The recall affects 163 vehicles in Ireland that were manufactured between 9 June 2010 and 30 October 2013.

Affected Vehicles

  • Make & Model: Kia Soul
  • Production Dates: 9 June 2010 – 30 October 2013
  • Number of Vehicles in Ireland: 163
  • Recall Type: Voluntary recall by Kia Ireland

Details of the Fault

The safety issue involves the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), which controls:

  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)

The problem arises because the HECU can remain live even when the vehicle is switched off. If moisture enters the HECU, it can cause an electrical short circuit, which may lead to an engine compartment fire.

Risks

This defect presents a serious risk of fire, both when the car is being driven and when parked. Fires can occur without warning, creating a hazard to occupants and nearby property.
